Expectations and Consequences for Adult and Student Behavior

The policy and procedures presented below promote mutual respect, civility, and orderly conduct among school employees, students, parents, and the public and are not intended to deprive any person of his/her right to freedom of expression. Lanikai Elementary Public Charter School seeks public cooperation with this endeavor.

Administrative Policy

Lanikai Elementary Public Charter School staff will treat parents and other members of the public with respect and expect the same in return. The school encourages positive communication with the public and will not tolerate abusive, hostile, or obscene speech, actions, or other forms of communication. In order to implement this policy, the following procedures are adopted:

  1. Any individual who disrupts or threatens to disrupt school/office operations, who threatens the health and safety of students or staff, who willfully causes property damage, who uses loud and/or offensive language which could provoke a violent reaction, or who has established a continued pattern of unauthorized entry on school property, will be directed to leave school property by the principal or designee.
  2. If any member of the public uses obscenities or speaks in a demanding, loud, insulting and/or demeaning manner to any member of the school staff, the administrator or employee to whom the remarks are directed will request the speaker to communicate in a civil manner. If corrective action is not taken by the abusing party, the school employee will notify the abusing party that the meeting, conference, or telephone conversation is terminated, and, if the meeting or conference is on school premises, the offending party will be directed to leave promptly.
  3. When an individual is directed to leave the school property pursuant to circumstances referenced above and refuses to leave, the principal may notify law enforcement officials. When warranted, the school may seek restraining orders.
  4. When it is determined by staff that a member of the public is in the process of violating the provisions of this policy, an effort should be made by staff to provide a written copy of this policy at the time of the occurrence. The employee shall notify his/her supervisor of the incident.

Respect

An important goal at Lanikai School is to create a school climate where everyone feels safe and respected. We teach students that a good way to practice respect is to treat people the way you want to be treated. Being respectful requires an attitude of honoring people and caring about their rights. Our goal is to create and maintain a positive learning environment where courtesy and kindness prevail and where there is respect for differences in people, customs, and cultures.

General Harassment

Harassment means picking on someone or using words or actions that are offensive or mean. It includes using words, writing, or pictures directed at an individual or group because of their race, color, sex, age, disability, body size, or appearance. It doesn't matter if the person who is harassing says he/she was only kidding or just having fun. If the behavior hurts someone, it is wrong. Students should report all incidents of harassment to their teacher or to the principal. Consequences for harassment might include education about the issue, a parent conference, an apology to the victim, time-out, suspension, or possibly expulsion from school.
